If you've been around here for any period of time, you know that there are certain phrases that will catch my attention. The phrase that caught me this time was "points of joy." There's something about that phrase that really struck a chord with me.
We know that there are pressure points, and stress points, but points that specifically produce joy? Sign me up!
I've been racking my brain trying to think where my points of joy would be located. I think, like a lot of people, my points of joy shift, especially depending on the season of life that I'm in. Right now, the season we're in is pretty hectic and it's only looking to get busier. I'm hoping to have a better grasp on it so it doesn't totally overwhelm me.
With that being said, a point of joy for me is a quiet, cool, rainy morning where I don't have to rush; I can savor the peace.
Our kids are all in middle and high school now, so they mostly want to be left alone, unless I'm offering to buy them stuff. Another point for me is when they are all kind of sprawled across me. One of my boys had his legs across my lap last night and one of our girls was half sitting on me while we watched one of my FAVORITE movies. It dawned on me that they weren't fighting, weren't trying to be obnoxious; they just wanted to be close to me and I loved it.
Another point for me is when I am doing something that will benefit my family in our home. I love making breads, even though they sometimes turn out looking like UFOs, and a couple of weeks ago, I took a bag of animal fat and made tallow, which we can use for a variety of things. I think that's really fun to be able to do something like that. Yes, it was a little gross, but it will be really helpful for us over the next year.
I asked a couple of my friends what some of their points of joy would be, and their responses were beautiful. One said the longevity like when something blooms or produces fruit. Another said her family (which I totally agree, I love her family), or when her friends get good news. Another yet said that gardening and being outside has been a point of joy for her.
If I really take a minute to think about it, I have several points of joy. Sure, there are several things that are distressing or are painful to me, but there is more joy than stress, more contentment than disappointment.
Happy August!
